Paul Rice Chairs Family Law Meeting

Paul Rice of the Rice Law Firm recently chaired a meeting of the Volusia County Bar Association’s Family Law Section on May 3, 2018, at the Volusia County Courthouse Annex in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Section meets two to three times per year to discuss recent developments in family law and procedure. Judge Dawn Nichols presented an update on the revisions to Seventh Judicial Circuit’s Standing Family Law Order as well as the Circuit’s default timesharing guidelines.

For the layman reading this article, Florida law no longer utilizes the polarizing labels of custody, primary residence or visitation but instead uses the parenting plan and timesharing schedule concepts. As for the Standing Family Law Order, this Order is automatically entered in every divorce action and outlines some basic ground rules for the divorcing parties to follow. An important aspect of the meeting is a roundtable discussion between Volusia County’s four family law judges, courthouse personnel and the family law attorneys. Many in attendance participated resulting in a lively discussion on several of topics and issues facing family law judges and lawyers.

Paul Rice has been practicing in the areas of divorce and family law for 35 years and has chaired the Family Law Section since 2004. Mr. Rice is board certified in divorce and family law.
